Centers and the Collective

How we name what SageFire is, and how someone belongs here without leading a center.

01The Question

A missing axis, not a naming problem.

There is a question worth settling before Connect. If return2wonder, Joy Restored, & Atlas Factor are centers and SageFire is also called a center, a Friend hears two of the same kind of thing. The category collapses at exactly the moment we need it to hold.

The good news is that this was never a naming problem. It was a missing axis.

Two Words, Two Jobs

Center

A work the Father has birthed in and through a particular life. It has a name, a mission, and a world it faces.

return2wonder. work2wonder. Joy Restored. Atlas Factor. Sagebrush.

A center goes somewhere. Others come alongside it.

The Collective

The family itself. Not a work with an audience but the body that carries the works.

It is not one of the centers.

It is what the centers have in common.

The Distinction, Said Cleanly

Centers are what the Father birthed through us.

The Collective is what He birthed among us.

“Through” and “among”. Same Father. Two prepositions. All callings honored, and the difference between a center and the Collective becomes obvious without anyone having to explain it twice.

Why Not “Hub”

(And we’ve used “hub” a lot historically)

A hub is the dead center of a wheel. Remove it and the spokes fall on the ground. It cuts directly against the Starfish conviction we actually hold. It is also a logistics word. Airports have hubs. Coworking spaces have hubs. Families do not.

The Collective already has its noun. It is the Collective.

02The Second Axis

Not how deep the relationship goes. Which direction the serving points.

We already have one axis and it is a good one. Friends. Family. Elders. That axis answers a depth question: how far into belonging has this person come?

What came up in conversation is a different question. Not how deep, but where does a person’s serving land? That is direction, not depth. Answering a direction question with our depth vocabulary is what made “SageFire is a center too” feel almost right and also wrong. Add the second axis and it resolves without renaming anything.

Axis One

Depth

How far into belonging has this person come?

Friends
Family
Elders

The axis we already have, and it is a good one.

Axis Two

Direction

Where does a person’s serving land?

EveryoneCalled to the Collective
and some, in addition
SomeCalled to a specific center

Everyone in the Collective is called to the Collective. Some are then called to a specific center as well. Direction, not depth. Adding it resolves the confusion without renaming anything.

Both are family. Both are serving.

This is not a consolation category. There is real work in the Collective, and people whose calling lands there rather than in a named center. They are not center-less.

They are collective-called.

03And Then, Only Then

The sentence we actually wanted.

Once that ground is laid, the sentence we actually wanted becomes safe to say: “The Collective can be their center”.

Said after the categories are set, it lands. Said before, it creates the exact confusion we are trying to avoid.

There was some language for this I pulled from in the larger SageFire Community Architecture Doc under Family: The Corridor from Attachment to Group Identity:

Every family member serves the health of the whole. That does not mean everyone leads a center. Some are called to the collective itself. They support, strengthen, and enrich the community through their presence, wisdom, and willingness to do what needs to be done. The collective can be their center.

Lines for Connect

SageFire is not one of the centers. SageFire is what the centers have in common.

All are called to the fire, some to a center as well.

You do not need a center to belong here.

Not an organization. People who belong to each other.

What This Protects

It keeps the category clean for people meeting us for the first time, and it keeps “serving the Collective” from reading as “support staff for the people with real callings”. Ick!

Centers are what the Father birthed through us. The Collective is what He birthed among us.
